Am I entitled to free legal advice?
Everyone, regardless of income, family situation, profession, social status or financial means is entitled to free first-line legal assistance. You can contact the Legal Assistance Committee for this by phone or by appointment. There, a lawyer will give you initial guiding advice.

Am I entitled to pro bono assistance?
Whether you are entitled to a pro-bono lawyer depends on your means of subsistence. People with limited means of subsistence can apply for a pro-bono lawyer. Minors are automatically entitled to this. Through the Legal Aid Office, we will help you allocate a (partially) free lawyer.
How can I apply for a pro bono lawyer?
You can submit your request for a pro bono lawyer, by appointment or by mail, to the Legal Aid Office. For this, you will have to be able to present the necessary documents to prove your income, livelihood and expenses.
Is pro bono assistance always completely free?
When you need more extensive legal advice, have to appear in court, or will be questioned, you need a lawyer. Depending on your financial means, you can hire a pro bono lawyer who will act for you for free or for a lower fee.
I am a minor, where can I go for pro bono assistance?
Are you under 18? Then you can hire a pro bono lawyer free of charge. He or she will assist you with all kinds of problems. So do not hesitate to contact a lawyer from the Union of Youth Lawyers or the BJB yourself. Or let someone you trust help you with this.

I have an appointment, how do I get to you?
The Legal Aid Office is easily accessible at our three locations.

  • In Antwerp, your appointment can be made at Bolivarplaats 20/15 in Antwerp.
  • Coming by car? Then you can park in the Q-Park car park
  • Coming by public transport? Take the train to Antwerp Central Station and at opera take the tram towards Zuid.
I have an argument with my lawyer, what should I do?
If you have a problem with your lawyer or find yourself in an argument, Balie Antwerpen will be happy to help you. Fill in the ‘request for intervention’ form and we will contact you as soon as possible
What is Balie Antwerp and what can they do for me?
We unite and represent nearly 3,000 lawyers from the province and support hundreds of litigants every day. Through the Legal Aid Office, we will help you assign a pro bono lawyer if you are entitled to one. You can also call on us if you find yourself in a dispute with your lawyer.

What does a lawyer cost?
For the services a lawyer provides, he charges a fee. In addition to the fee, he also charges an additional fee for expenses incurred. In case of assistance in proceedings, court and bailiff's fees must also be paid.
How do I become a lawyer?
To become a lawyer, you must first obtain a Master or Licentiate degree in Law. This is followed by a three-year internship as a trainee lawyer under the supervision of an experienced lawyer, your trainee master. During this internship you must also fulfil specific internship obligations.
What is a mediator?
The mediator is independent and neutral and intervenes as a third party in a conflict. He or she tries to restore dialogue between the parties by listening and promoting effective communication with a view to reaching a mutual agreement, established in the mediation agreement.
